GIUNTA Roberta

Roberta Giunta is a Full Professor of Islamic Archaeology and Art history and Islamic Epigraphy at the Department of Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean (DAAM) at the University of Naples L'Orientale (ssd STAA-01/K). Since 2012, she has been the head of the Islamic section of the “Umberto Scerrato” Oriental Museum, and a member of the academic board of the PhD program in “Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean” at DAAM.
From 2015 to 2018, she served as Coordinator of the undergraduate program “Ancient Civilizations and Archaeology: East and West” and as President of the Area Board for Ancient Studies. Since 2017, she has been the Deputy Editor of the journal Annali dell'Università di Napoli L'Orientale, sezione Orientale (AIONor, ISSN 0393-3180). From 2021 to 2023, she was the President of the Interdepartmental Center for Archaeological Services (CISA).
Starting in January 2024, she will serve as the Director of DAAM.
Her research focuses on archaeology, art history, epigraphy, and numismatics in the Islamic world, particularly related to medieval Asian territories. Since 1993, she has participated in numerous excavation and research missions in Pakistan (Swat, NWFP), Egypt, Yemen (Tihama), Lebanon, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Turkey, Iraqi Kurdistan, Oman (Dhofar), and Jordan. Since 2004, she has been the Deputy Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Afghanistan, and since 2022, the Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission at Zafar/al-Balid (Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman). She has collaborated with many national and international museum institutions.
