Antonia Soriente is an Italian linguist specialized in the languages of Borneo and Professor of Indonesian Language and Literature at the Department of Asian, African and Mediterranean studies at University of Napoli ‘L’Orientale’
She graduated in Italy and pursued her academic career in Indonesia where she obtained her Master’s degree in Linguistics and in Malaysia where she wrote her dissertation on the classification of the Kenyah languages of Borneo.
She has worked for the Jakarta Field Station of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology for ten years as a researcher and later as a guest scholar when she started her academic career as a lecturer of Indonesian at the University of Napoli, ‘L’Orientale’.
She is a research fellow at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies engaging in collaborative research with staff at ILCAA (Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa) and is a member of the editorial board of NUSA (Linguistic studies of languages in and around Indonesia) and other international journals.
From 2017 to 2020 she was a member of the International Research Project CRISEA (Competing Regional Integration in South-East Asia) of European Commission - Horizon 2020 coordinated by EFEO.
From 2017 to 2020 she was a member of the International Research Projects of the Research Project A Research on Varieties of Malayic Languages coordinated by Atsuko Utsumi - Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
Her main research field is the description and the documentation of Kenyah and Punan languages of Borneo for which she has collected extensive documentation and also applied linguistics, bilingualism and child language acquisition.
She also engages in research on Indonesian contemporary literature and culture and translates literature from Indonesian to Italian and from Italian to Indonesian.
She is a member of several International Research Associations such as ISMEO, EUROSEAS, ITASEAS, ItaliAsean.
