TERRANOVA Tiziana

Tiziana Terranova (PhD in Media and Communications, Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, UK) is Professor of Sociology of Media and Communications at the Department of Human at Social Sciences at L’Orientale where she is also Director of the Inter-University Research Centre CRiTT (Centro di Ricerca sulle Tecnoculture Transnazionali) as well as a member of the board of directors of the Centre for Postcolonial and Gender Studies (CSPG) and Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence AI-CoDED on Artificial Intelligence, Communication and Democracy. Previously, she was Lecturer in the Department of Cultural Studies, University of East London (1997-2000), as well as Lecturer in Sociology of Culture and Film) at the University of Essex (2000-2005). She has been Fulbright Scholar at New York University (1993-1994) and Fulbright Chair in French and Italian Studies at Northwestern University (2017). She is a Member of the editorial boards of the journals Studi Culturali (Il Mulino), Subjectivity (Palgrave), and Theory, Culture and Society (Sage); and of the transnational research collective Critical Computation Bureau.
She has collaborated, among others, on the following international research projects: EUMEPLAT, European Media Platforms: Assessing Positive and Negative Externalities for European Culture (Horizon 2020); Law and the Human (Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK, 2020); the COST Action European Forum for Advanced Practices (2020–2023); the project Immediations (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, 2011–2019); A Topological Approach to Cultural Dynamics (Sixth Framework Programme of the European Union, 2007–2009); and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) program Virtual Society? (1998–2000). In 2019 she was invited by the Senate of the Republic of Chile and the Nobel Prize Foundation to participate in the Nobel Prize Dialogue in Santiago, Chile. Since 2024 she has been Research Affiliate at the Edmund W. Gordon Institute, Columbia University, NYC, USA. In 2026 she has become e co-recipient of a Global Collaboration Grant from Roberta Buffet Institute for Global Affairs (Northwestern University, Illinois, US)
