Maria Pia di Buono earned her PhD in Communication Sciences with a dissertation in Computational Linguistics at the University of Salerno.
She worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Zagreb – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, as well as at leading European centers of excellence, such as the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology – Semantic Computing Group at Bielefeld University (Germany), taking part in national and international projects.
Since 2019, she has been a researcher in Modern Language Teaching (GLOT-01/b) at the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” where she teaches General Translation Studies and Language Technologies.
She was a member of the first board of the National PhD Program in Artificial Intelligence – AI & Society Area – XXXVII cycle.
In collaboration with several colleagues, in 2021 she won the EuropeanaTech Challenge for Europeana Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Datasets and, in 2022, achieved third place in Challenge 4 of the EU DATATHON, organized by the Publications Office of the European Union.
In 2024, together with two partners, she founded Dahlia s.r.l., the first spin-off of the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” which offers natural language processing and artificial intelligence solutions.
Her research focuses on natural language processing and machine translation, with particular attention to semantic representation, the creation of linguistic resources, and the evaluation of language models. She has authored numerous publications, often in collaboration with international scholars.
