Curriculum Vitae

ENGLISH

I obtained the title of PhD in History and Society of the modern and contemporary age, at the Italian Institute of Human Sciences (SUM) in 2008, after a research period at the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and at the Fernand Braudel Center at SUNY, Binghamton, with a thesis in sociology of knowledge on the relationship between social movements, thirdworldism, decolonial and postcolonial studies. I obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the role of associate professor in 2017. Since 2023 I have been senior researcher in Sociology (SPS/07) at the Department of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Naples L'Orientale where I teach Sociology, and Cultural and Postcolonial Studies of the Mediterranean. I am a Research Fellow at the Center for Global Studies of the University of Cambridge, Directeur d'etudes associès at the Fondation Maison de Sciences de l'Homme in Paris, and of the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies.

My research interests concern Global Studies, capitalism, the relationship between modernity and science, with particular attention to epistemological and methodological issues. I deal with the formation of non-Western concepts and knowledge, within the framework of the possible dialogue between distant civilizations and cultures. I work on postcolonial and decolonial perspectives, as well as on World-Systems Analysis and, more generally, on historical sociology. I worked on social movements in the Global South and, later, on indigenous knowledges and Afrocentric ontologies. I am interested in Eastern philosophies, in particular non-dualistic ontologies, and I investigate the epistemological heritage that non-Western and non-hegemonic knowledges offer to contemporary critical reflection. I study the circulation of knowledge in the pre-modern Mediterranean and the relationship between heresy, magic and modern science, within the horizon of the Italian Renaissance. I am passionate about the life and thought of Giordano Bruno.

I have written three monographs so far. “Concept Formation in Global Studies: Post-Western Approaches to Critical Human Knowledge” (Rowman and Littlefield, 2024). “Science and the Decolonization of Social Theory: Unthinking Modernity” (Palgrave, 2016). “A sud di nessun Sud: postcolonialismo, movementi antisistemici, e studi decoloniali” (Odoya, 2009).
I edited the first anthology of decolonial thinkers translated into Italian, which is entitled "America Latina e modernità: l'opzione decoloniale, saggi scelti" (Arcoiris, 2014).
The articles I wrote appeared in Sociology; Journal of Historical Sociology; Cultural Sociology; Socio; Postcolonial Studies; European Journal of International Relations; Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia; Science, Technology and Society; Storica; Soft Power; Spectrum Journal of Global Studies.
I have written an entry for the New Routledge Encyclopedia on Race and Racism, one for the Palgrave Handbook of Global Social Change, and one for the Routledge Handbook of the Histories of Sociologies.

I am a member of the directive committee of the Interuniversity Research Center on Transnational Technocultures (CRITT), and co-founder of the international research group Non-Hegemonic World-Sociology, sponsored by the United Nations. I have been part of several international research networks including the Colonial, Postcolonial and Decolonial Working Group, Global Social Theory, Conceptual and Terminological Analysis in Social Sciences. I was a Visiting Research Associate at the Delhi University from 2015 to 2017. In 2017, as an Early career scholar of the World International Studies Committee, I obtained an award in the framework of the Explorative Research program, on the topic of Post-Western International theory.
Since 2023 I have been a member of the Research Commission of the University of Naples l'Orientale and of its Executive Board.

I write novels and am a columnist for Corriere del Mezzogiorno

ITALIANO

Ho scritto, finora, tre monografie. "Concept Formation in Global Studies: Post-Western Approaches to Critical Human Knowledge" (Rowman and Littlefield, 2024). "Science and the Decolonization of Social Theory: Unthinking Modernity" (Palgrave, 2016).
Gli articoli che ho scritto sono apparsi su Sociology; Journal of Historical Sociology; Cultural Sociology; Socio; Postcolonial Studies; European Journal of International Relations; Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia; Science, Technology and Society; Storica; Spectrum Journal of Global Studies.
Ho scritto una voce per la New Routledge Encyclopedia on Race and Racism, per il Palgrave Handbook of Global Social Change, e il Routledge Handbook of the Histories of Sociologies.

Asian Sociological Association - Seijo Center for Glocal studies - ounded in October 2008, the Center for Glocal Studies (CGS) is the newest research center at Seijo University for the study and promotion of the material we have formulated as and named "glocal studies." Drawing on the framework of glocal studies, a discipline based on the concept of "glocalization" advocated by British sociologist Roland Robertson, the CGS strives to shed light on hitherto not-fully-examined socio-cultural dynamics within myriad "contact zones" between the global and the local, the center and the periphery, and the "external and internal" of various different groupings and/or communities. In conducting glocal studies, the CGS also focuses on developments that symmetrize what is thought of as an asymmetrical socio-cultural power balance between Euro-American and non-Euro-American nations. Since its establishment, the CGS has sponsored research projects on social contact, community reconfiguration, socio-economic dynamics, and cultural representation/historical epistemology in the framework of glocal studies. The CGS also sponsors symposiums, seminars, lectures, and workshops that bring a highly specialized and multi-disciplinary group of CGS researchers into dialogue with their national and international peers, university students, and the general public. The CGS especially seeks to enrich contemporary debates about globalization and resultant synchronically and diachronically changing societies and cultures from a trans-disciplinary perspective. Science and Sufism in International Relations - 1) if non-Western International Relations theories employ non-Western philosophical resources for generating a derivative discourse of Western/Eurocentric International Relations theories, thereby failing to transcend the conjectural boundaries of Western/Eurocentric International Relations; and (2) if non-Western International Relations theories manufacture an exceptionalist discourse that is specifically applicable to the narrow experiential realities of a native time–space zone, thereby failing to offer an alternative universalist explanation that grants a broad-spectrum relevance to Western/Eurocentric International Relations. In the light of these realizations, the present article aims to explore if “Sufism” — as a non-Western intellectual resource — is capable of offering a fertile ground for crafting a non-derivative and non-exceptionalist Global International Relations theory. In order to do this, the article employs the insights gained from the poetry of a 13th-century Sufi scholar, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī. (01/01/2017 - )20170101
