Biography
With a Ph.D. from the European University Institute, I have taught Islamic and Ottoman History at the Université Aix-Marseille at Aix-en-Provence (2009-12). My work considers the intricacies of cultural and commercial exchanges between Mediterranean Europe and the Middle East through a series of topics derived from my interest in identity manipulation, mixed networks, and legal relations.
Recently published essays consider legal attitudes towards the Franks adopted by late Medieval Islamic societies and the emergence of new ones under the Ottomans.
I am the author of Pouvoir et finance en Méditerranée pré-moderne : le deuxième Etat mamelouk et le commerce des épices (1389-1517) (Barcelona, CSIC, 2009). Deriving from my current interest in legal history and cross-confessional relations, a second book, entitled Breaching the Bronze Wall: Franks at Mamluk and Ottoman Courts and Markets has been published in 2020 by Brill Publishers.
I am currently developing a research project on the Arab involvement in South and Southeast Asia during the late Mamluk era and drafting a handbook on Islam and Global History (600-1600), stemming from the four-year experience of my Master's course on the topic.
I am currently teaching courses on Islamic History (undergraduate) and master's courses on Islam and Global History, and on Digital Humanities (second term 2024-5). I am interested in supervising Masters's and PhD theses on aspects related to the Social, economic, and cultural history of Arab countries, cross-cultural trade, and the history of justice and legal relations.
