SAPIO FLORA

Since 2024, I have been Associate Professor at the University of Naples "L’Orientale", where I teach History and Institutions of Contemporary China and Domestic Governance of the People’s Republic of China. After earning my degree in Political Science, I obtained a PhD in History and Civilizations of East Asia from Sapienza University of Rome. I hold the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) as Associate Professor in the academic fields 14/B2 (History of International Relations, Societies and Institutions of Non-European Countries) and 10/N3 (Cultures of Central and East Asia).

My research focuses on area studies and international history, with particular attention to the institutions of the People’s Republic of China. I have conducted research in Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States, collaborating with institutions such as the Australian National University, the University of Hong Kong, NYU School of Law, the University of Würzburg, and the Leiden Asia Centre.

I am the author of Sovereign Power and the Law in China (Brill, 2010), and have published widely in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. I take part in national and international research projects (PRIN, ChinaMed, EUVIP), and I have coordinated or contributed to interdisciplinary academic initiatives on propaganda and political communication.

I am involved in institutional activities within the Department and Degree Programme Councils, and I serve on various committees dealing with student advising, disability services, academic quality, and admissions to the Master’s Programme in Institutions and Relations of Asia and Africa. I also contribute to the negotiation of mobility and double-degree agreements and to the planning of international teaching and research activities.
