Academic research and teaching
After graduating in Modern Literatures at the University of Pisa, under the direction of Francesco Orlando (2003), he obtained a Doctorate degree in French Studies at Sapienza University of Rome (2007), with a final dissertation on the Image of the author in La Fontaine’s works.
Thanks to a post-doctoral grant, he led researches on the writing of history in Saint-Réal’s works at the University of Sorbonne nouvelle - Paris III, under the direction of Jean-Paul Sermain (2009-2010).
From 2009 to 2015 he taught French Language and French Literature at the University « Guglielmo Marconi », as a contract lecturer, then as a RtdA lecturer, and finally as an associate professor, creating several multimedia courses and laboratories. In the same period, he worked as a contract lecturer at the universities of Trento, Cassino and Roma Tre.
Associate Professor, then Full Professor at the University of Naples « L’Orientale », he was member of the University Senate from 2017 to 2023 and since 2016 of the « Collegio dei docenti » of the Doctorate in Studi letterari, linguistici e comparati.
Member of the SUSLLF and of Sigismondo Malatesta Association, he was the Secretary of Seminario di Filologia Francese from 2010 to 2015 and member of the Council from 2018 to 2021.
His main research field is La Fontaine’s work and the tradition of humanist fable. He devoted to La Fontaine a volume and several articles in French and Italian reviews. He worked on the Neo-latin, French and Italian collections of Aesopic fables of 16th and 17th centuries, and on the reception of Italian and Oriental fables in 17th century France. Member of the research group “Jouvences de la Fable (1600-1750)” at the University of Paris-Sorbonne and of the editorial board of “Le Fablier”, he collaborates since 2013 to “Fabula numerica”, a project of digital humanities directed by Patrick Dandrey (CELLF 16-18/Laboratoire d’excellence OBVIL). Within this project, he co-organized with Patrick Dandrey the conference La Fontaine et la culture européenne. Au carrefour des Fables, Université Paris-Sorbonne, October 2018 and with Patrick Dandrey and Jean-Charles Darmon the conference « Qu’un ami véritable est une douce chose! ». Amitiés et dilections lafontainiennes, Université Paris-Sorbonne/École Normale Supérieure, November, 2021. Since 2016 he is Vice President of the Société des Amis de Jean de La Fontaine.
As a specialist of 17th Century Literature, he wrote on theatre, novel, historical discourse, literary criticism and moralists’ tradition. He studied mainly Saint-Réal, Saint-Évremond and La Bruyère. Moreover, he edited and translated in Italian some 17th Century texts: Madame de Lafayette, La Principessa di Montpensier, Portaparole, 2011 and Molière, Anfitrione, in Teatro, Bompiani, 2013. He also published the handbook Introduzione al Seicento francese e al classicismo (Edizioni Nuova Cultura, 2006).
Another research field is contemporary French fiction. As a member of the Larc since 2005, he wrote on contemporary historical fiction and on the presence of French classical authors in contemporary novel. He collaborated with the PRIN research 2009 La narrativa francese contemporanea: temi e problemi critici (local unity La Sapienza) and took part (with Silvia Disegni and Dominique Viart) in the organization of the conference Écrire avec les livres. Présences de la littérature française du passé dans les romans et récits contemporains (Naples, October 2018).
Besides his participation to national and international conferences, he held conferences for Phd students (L’Orientale, Sapienza, Ca’ Foscari, University of L’Aquila, University Paris XIII), he was member of examining boards for Phd dissertations (Sapienza, Cassino, Napoli L’Orientale) and of adjudicating boards for RtdA positions and contract lecturers. He is a supervisor of a Phd student in co-tutorship and coordinator for « L’Orientale » of research projects (see above).
