Research fields
My research path revolves around a central question: how does language contribute to constructing, reflecting, and at times distorting the dynamics of power, identity, and citizenship in democratic societies? Starting from this question, I have explored three main areas: political communication, media representation, and legislative language, with a constant focus on gender issues.
One of the areas I investigated concerns digital political discourse. The analysis of the YouTube channel of the Ministry of Equality (2020–2023) and the figure of Minister Irene Montero revealed how institutional media can serve as spaces for constructing inclusive imaginaries, but also as arenas of tension between technical language, activism, and political narrative. In parallel, the study of the Twitter profiles of Isabel Díaz Ayuso and Mónica García Gómez highlighted the strategic use of definition as an argumentative tool to construct opposing political identities, often through semantic polarization. Another line of research focuses on the representation of women in media and political discourse. The analysis of Vox’s website and its discourse on feminism revealed a systematic use of persuasive strategies aimed at delegitimizing feminist claims, promoting a conservative vision of women’s roles. These studies have contributed to a broader reflection on the symbolic dimension of power and its public representation. The COVID-19 pandemic provided another field of investigation. The analysis of metaphors in newspaper headlines and the representation of social actors in the Spanish press showed how journalistic language constructs interpretive frames of the crisis, oscillating between alarmism, heroism, and blame. Similarly, the study of surrogacy agency websites targeting Spanish clients revealed persuasive strategies and ideological representations in complex bioethical contexts. These inquiries intersected with an analysis of media populism, particularly in the discursive construction of the Greek crisis and Brexit in the Spanish press, where populist discourse emerges as a tool for simplification and emotional mobilization.
Currently, these reflections converge in the PRIN DiLeGIS project, which investigates the relationship between language, gender, and citizenship in Italian and Spanish legislative texts. Normative language, with its regulatory function, reflects and shapes cultural and political change, contributing to the construction of value systems and the definition of what is legitimate and worthy of protection.
In parallel, within the Erasmus+ FOM@PLAY project, I explore the theme of freedom of movement as a founding value of the European Union. The project aims to collect and enhance the lived experiences of European citizens, promoting an inclusive and conscious citizenship beyond institutional narratives and against populist simplifications, such as those that emerged in the context of Brexit.
In summary, the common thread of my research is the conviction that language is not merely a tool, but a space where social reality is constructed, rights are negotiated, and future societies are imagined
