MAURIZIO PAOLILLO
CURRICULUM STUDIORUM
Associate Professor of Chinese Philology at the University of Naples "L'Orientale" since March 2020. Previously, Associate Professor at the University of Salento since autumn 2015, and Researcher at the same institution (2005-2015). He graduated from the Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples in 1990. In 1999 he obtained a PhD in Art History of India and East Asia from the University of Genoa.
He has been a member since 1993 of the Italian Association for Chinese Studies (AISC), for which he was a member of the Board of Directors in the four-year period 2015-2019; since 2000 of the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS); since 2009 of the Chinese Studies Association of Australia (CSAA) and of the New Zealand Asian Society.
He was awarded a MAE scholarship in 1989-90 to attend courses at Xiamen University, People's China; and a scholarship from L'Orientale University of Naples for further education abroad, conducting research at INALCO in Paris in 1992-93 and 1994-95.
He is the author of five monographs, seven edited works, and about 90 publications in Italian, English, French and Chinese that have appeared nationally and internationally.
Member since 2019 (XXXV Cycle) of the College of the PhD in "Languages, Literatures, Cultures and their Applications" activated at the Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Salento. Previously, he was at the University of Salento a member of the Board of the PhDs in Literatures and Philologies, Address in Oriental and European Languages and Literatures, and in Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Since 2024 he is also a Member of the Board of the PhD programme ‘Historical and Philosophical Heritage for Sustainable Innovation’, University of Bari (Cycle XL).
At the University of Salento he held from A.A. 2008-09 to A.A. 2018-19 lectures in the framework of the Master's Degree Course in "Intercultural Linguistic Mediation in Immigration and Asylum", University of Salento - Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures in collaboration with CIR - Italian Council for Refugees.
In A.Y. 2012-13, he was contracted to teach Chinese Art History at the University of Urbino 'Carlo Bo'.
In A.Y. 2012-13, he taught Chinese Literature and Culture I at the University of Macerata.
In the academic years 2007-08 and 2008-09, he was also assigned to teach History of East Asian Art at the University of Genoa. In the academic years 2007-08 and 2009-10, he was entrusted with the teaching of History of Religions in China and History of Philosophy and Religions in China at the University of Urbino 'Carlo Bo'.
In the academic year 2012-13, he was contracted to teach Chinese Literature and Culture I at the University of Macerata.
In the academic years 2007-08 and 2008-09, he was also assigned to teach History of East Asian Art at the University of Genoa. In the academic years 2007-08 and 2009-10, he was entrusted with the teaching of History of Religions in China and History of Philosophy and Religions in China at the University of Urbino 'Carlo Bo'.
He has lectured at about 130 national and international conferences (Austria, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand); at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cultural Office of the Consulate of Italy in Shanghai), he held various conferences in the years 2003-2009 at university and diplomatic venues in Shanghai and Suzhou, People's China.
He acted from the beginning of 2018 to May 2019 as Scientific Co-Director of the Study, Research and Edition Project related to the awarding of the XXX International Carlo Scarpa Prize for the Garden of the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche, awarded to the Tea Gardens of Dazhangshan, Anhui, China.
He has organised various conferences; it is worth mentioning his recent organisation of the International Workshop 'China and the West on the Silk Roads: Perceptions of the Other and Encounters from the Warring States to the Missionary Period', University of Naples L'Orientale, Naples, 4 December 2023.
Invited speaker in December 2018 at Xinan Minzu Daxue in Chengdu, and at WHITRAP-UNESCO at Tongji Daxue in Shanghai.
He was a Lecturer in December 2005 and December 2008 in the Fourth and Sixth Training Course for Chinese Italianist Lecturers, Shanghai International Studies University-Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Cultural Affairs General Consulate of Italy in Shanghai, People's China.
He was appointed in 2009 by the Shanghai Italian Cultural Institute as an expert in the creation of the "Marco Polo Memorial Hall" in Yangzhou, People's Republic of China.
He has worked as an interpreter and consultant in China for Italian and Chinese organisations and companies. From April 2006 to January 2007, he was an external consultant for RAI in the framework of the agreement with CCTV (China Central Television).
In 2008 and 2009, he taught Chinese language and culture as part of the Master's course "Cindia Investors and Promoters" (Autonomous Province of Bolzano-AssFORSEO).
