KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY

The course aims to develop a solid command of expository skills, both written and oral, in Italian. Students will acquire the ability to understand and comment on specialist essays and scientific contributions (such as conference and convention texts), produced both in Italian and French. The educational path will promote the acquisition of awareness regarding the linguistic problems related to multilingualism and multiculturalism. The ability to develop original ideas for the resolution of linguistic and translation problems will be stimulated, preparing students for individual, guided or autonomous research. Students will learn to collect and interpret study data in a critical-operational manner, also providing individual and innovative solutions. The course aims to develop learning skills that allow students to continue studying autonomously and self-managed, to start and develop personal research, continue studies and ensure continuous updating of lexical and cultural knowledge. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the specificities and problems of specialist translation. Students will learn and apply the main translation strategies appropriately. They will be able to analyze a specialized source document, identify potential textual and cognitive difficulties and evaluate the strategies and resources needed to reformulate it in line with communicative needs. The course will enable them to demonstrate their ability to understand specialized written texts of different genres in the languages ​​studied, as well as in Italian. Finally, students will acquire, develop and use thematic and sector-specific knowledge relevant to translation needs (mastery of concept systems, reasoning methods, presentation standards, terminology and phraseology, specialized sources, etc.). They will learn to analyze and justify their translation solutions and choices, using the appropriate metalanguage and applying adequate theoretical approaches. They will also be able to understand and implement quality control strategies, using appropriate tools and techniques.

APPLICATION SKILLS

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to apply the knowledge and understanding acquired in a professional manner in the workplace. They will be able to translate different types of material on and for various media and target audiences, using appropriate tools and techniques. The course will allow students to set up and implement a technical-scientific translation project from French to Italian, evaluating the results objectively and reporting in a clear and well-argued manner. The main objective of the course is the critical analysis of specialized texts and their translation in order to make students more aware of their translation choices from French to Italian. Ample space will be given to the practice of computer-assisted translation, to the enhancement of the ability to process terminological material and to the drafting of texts. The translation practice in the classroom will also be carried out with the help of databases and terminological resources available online.

JUDGEMENT AUTONOMY

The course aims to develop in students the ability to independently find or integrate data useful for studying and reflecting on topics related to theories, methodologies and linguistic systems, as well as for translating, editing and editing specialist texts. Students will learn to select and limit such data to formulate autonomous judgments and offer effective solutions in their areas of expertise. They will be able to make personal choices and express critical evaluations on the effectiveness of linguistic communications and on the adequacy of translations with respect to the source texts, recipients, communicative and professional needs.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The course aims to develop the ability to communicate clearly, both in Italian and French, the critical issues and ideas developed regarding the relationship between specialized translations and their sources, the theories and techniques of specialized translation, the drafting and translation of specialized texts, and the themes of linguistic analysis and descriptions. Students will acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively in public and to express the contents of the disciplines with appropriate terminology and clarity, both in the scientific and educational-popular fields. They will also be able to draft written texts with appropriate terminology and clarity of exposition.

LEARNING ABILITY

The course aims to develop in students the ability to self-assess, update and continuously improve their skills and abilities through personal and collaborative learning strategies. The learning skills needed to continue studying and/or conducting research independently will be consolidated. This includes topics related to linguistic theories and methodologies, analyses and descriptions of linguistic systems, specialized translations, their purposes and related lexicological resources and tools.
