Curriculum Vitae
Sergio Corrado was born in Naples (1961).
He graduated from the University of Naples “Federico II” (1985) and obtained his PhD in German studies from the University of Naples L’Orientale and the University of Pisa (1991), with a dissertation on Rilke’s “Gedichte an die Nacht”.
He was Assistant Professor at the University of Bari (1993), and from 1994 on at the Ca’ Foscari University (Venice); then he became an Associate Professor in German literature in 2000 at the University of Naples L’Orientale; since 2018 is Full Professor in German literature at the same university.

He was: Coordinator of the Erasmus+ Programme for his University (delegated by the Rector); Member of the Academic Senate, the Board of Directors, the Department Council, the Ethics Committee, the Disciplinary Board; Coordinator of Degree Course.
RESEARCH AREAS
1. GERMAN POETRY: 20th Century (in particular: Rilke), 19th Century (Platen, Romantik), contemporary (Bachmann, Jandl, H.M. Enzensberger, Heiβenbüttel); theory of poetry.
2. GOETHEZEIT: neoclassicism; paganism and Christianity (Goethe, Heine); aesthetic theories (Winckelmann, Herder); Hölderlin.
3. CONTEMPORARY GERMAN LITERATURE: in particular Uwe Timm, Rainald Goetz, Christian Kracht; cultural themes (work and craftsmanship; archive, media, memory; crisis of representation, ethnography, postcolonial theories; economy in the literature; language of cultural studies); literature and performativity; poetry and design (Heiβenbüttel).
4. CRISIS: theories and discourses of crisis; crisis of the new economy in Germany after the reunification and Greek crisis (2008). His research project: “Narratives of Crisis. Literature and Film in Italy, Greek and Germany (2000-2015)” (University of Naples L’Orientale, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University of Leipzig) was founded by DAAD (2016).
5. GREECE AND MEDITERRANEAN: relationships between German and Greek culture (ancient and modern); the mediterranean island as literary and cultural theme (representations of insularity); philhellenism; Aegean.
Since 2010, he is a member of the Editorial Board of «Annali. Sezione germanica» (journal of the Department of Literary, Linguistic and Cultural Studies at the University of Naples L’Orientale).
Since 2014, he is a member of the Academic Board of the PhD in Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies at the University of Naples L’Orientale.

- Erasmus exchanges with the Universities of Aachen, Athens (National and Kapodistrian University, where he has frequently taught since 2013), Bayreuth, Berlin (Freie Universität), Erzurum, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg, Cologne, Leipzig, Luxembourg, Thessaloniki (Aristotle University), Siegen, Vechta, and with the University of Basel (Swiss-Europe Programme).
- In 2006, he participated in the Graduiertenkolleg “Codierung der Gewalt” (Humboldt University of Berlin; directed by Klaus R. Scherpe).
- In 2009, he participated in the network: “Gewalt der Archive. Beiträge zur Kulturgeschichte der Wissensspeicherung”, promoted by Humboldt University of Berlin and funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (coordinators: Thomas Weitin, University of Konstanz; Burkhardt Wolf, Humboldt University of Berlin).
- In 2015, he conceived the research project: “Narrative der Krise. Literatur und Kino in Italien, Griechenland, Deutschland (2000-2015)” (Narratives of Crisis. Literature and Cinema in Italy, Greece, Germany (2000-2015)), a collaboration between the University of Naples L’Orientale, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Leipzig. The project was selected by the DAAD and awarded funding under the Hochschuldialoge mit Südeuropa (University Dialogues with Southern Europe) Programme, and was carried out in 2016.
- Since 2015, he has been an international member of examination boards for Associate and Full Professors in German Literature and in Comparative Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
- In 2018/2019, he participated in the work planned by the partnership between the Universities of Vechta, Athens (National and Kapodistrian) and Thessaloniki (Aristotle), funded by the DAAD.
- Between 2021 and 2023, he participated in various conferences on topics related to Greece (Philhellenism, the Aegean, Hölderlin), taking part in the work of several research groups (FU Berlin, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Paderborn, Aegean University of Izmir).
- From 2022 to 2025, he participated in the University Research Project (PRA – University of Naples L’Orientale) “Mediterranean Archives of Memory” (ALMAMED; director: Carlo Vecce), an interdisciplinary project focused on archives produced by intellectuals, writers, artists, and figures from the world of entertainment and culture in the Mediterranean area.
- He is Co-President, together with Thomas Nehrlich (University of Bern), of the 12. Internationale und interdisziplinäre Alexander-von-Humboldt-Konferenz, on the theme: “Wissenschaftliche und poetische Reisen zwischen dem Mittelmeerraum und Lateinamerika”, to be held in September 2026 in Naples, organised by the University of Naples L’Orientale together with: Universität Bern and California Polytechnic-Humboldt, with the support of: Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies, and the Goethe-Institut.
