SUMMARY OF THE SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
The research experience gained over the years has consolidated my interest in the study of online discourses in English as the privileged tools for analyzing the several discursive constructions on various social networking sites within a multimodal perspective. This line of research has been pursued with reference to the study of media discourse as a tool for redefining gender identities or as a form of re-appropriation enacted by the so-called minority or targeted groups. These interests have focused on the multimodal analysis of different forms on online hate speech in the wide English-speaking contexts. Various identity representations have been explored by examining both descriptive and evaluative elements suitable for the recognition of socially 'weak' groups and of the values they belong to.
The contributions originated from this activity have merged into some scientific articles and in four edited volumes, and two monographs, but also in papers read at international conferences. Another research interest has worked to deepen the investigation concerning the discursive strategies implemented by the media in the construction of organized crime syndicates, also in its multimodal dimension and through the analysis of audiovisual translation (AVT). The research has deepened the discussion on organized crime, a phenomenon that in Ireland is mainly the result of media construction. In particular, the analysis was carried out by means of:
1. tools for the linguistic analysis of large corpora, using Sketch Engine and WordSmith Tools;
2. innovative multimodal critical tools for the study of the representation of social actors through the examination of the semiotic grammar used in the construction of crime – e.g. nVivo and Atlas.ti.
The study has required the collection of dedicated multimodal corpora, whose examination has led to the identification of new elements in the semantic field. The results of these studies have been presented at various national and international conferences and published in journals of the disciplinary sector and in volumes and collective works, both nationally and internationally.

1. tools for the linguistic analysis of large corpora, using Sketch Engine and WordSmith Tools;
2. innovative multimodal critical tools for the study of the representation of social actors through the examination of the semiotic grammar used in the construction of crime – e.g. nVivo and Atlas.ti.
The study has required the collection of dedicated multimodal corpora, whose examination has led to the identification of new elements in the semantic field. The results of these studies have been presented at various national and international conferences and published in journals of the disciplinary sector and in volumes and collective works, both nationally and internationally.

Comparative film and TV studies focusing on representations of diversity (e.g., gender, queer identities, disability, marginality) and on the narrative and multimodal devices shaping spectatorship and the construction of otherness. The research studies intersect discourse and social-semiotic perspectives applied to audiovisual products.
Digital discourse studies on online communicative practices, focusing on identity, exclusion dynamics and discursive violence (including forms of hate speech and targeted attacks). The approach combines discourse-analytical (also critical) frameworks with corpus-based methods to detect recurrent patterns in digital contexts.
Research in (Critical) Discourse Studies and multimodality, focusing on the discursive/semiotic construction of identities in media and audiovisual texts. Particular attention is given to gender, non-hegemonic masculinities and queer subjectivities, through integrated verbal/visual analysis and social-semiotic approaches to social-actor representation.
Research on discursive and multimodal strategies through which media construct crime, criminal organisations and criminal figures (with particular attention to Irish and transnational representations). The research studies integrate social-semiotic approaches and corpus-based methods to examine narratives, social actors and the semiotic grammar of crime.
Research on humour as a discursive practice and identity resource in media, focusing on the intersections of humour with gender and sexuality and on inclusion/exclusion dynamics enacted through humorous strategies. The research studies also include multimodal analyses of screen-based texts and diasporic cultural contexts.
Research on linguistic diversity and superdiversity in changing media and communicative landscapes, focusing on “languaging diversity”, identity construction, and the circulation of linguistic/semiotic resources within sociolinguistic and discourse-analytical perspectives.
Translation Studies, with a particular focus on Audiovisual Translation (AVT), addressing cultural transfer and discursive re-formulation in screen-based texts (subtitling/adaptation). The research studies include multimodal and corpus-based approaches to AVT and its impact on identity, variation and media representations.
