Abstract:
This paper is about Ionesco’s thought on monstrosity, which he associates with politics. Monsters appear in his works when power emerges. In Eugène Ionesco’s play, Rhinocéros, is showed the transformation of humans into rhinoceroses, but only when they want to join the herd. They are motivated by the desire of freedom, power, and changement. This play emphasizes the purposeless and absurdity of the human existence with a critique of the rise of fascism before the Second World War in Europe
