Abstract:
This paper examines the several aspects related to the world of perfumes in Greece from 1000 BC till 500 BC: as a powerful weapon of the girl's appeal and gracefulness; as aromatic oil which was used by the athletes for greasing their bodies; as expression of the wealth through which the elites distinguished themselves; as merchandise which gives profits to the traders (the emporoi); as aroma which was burnt on the altar in order to satisfy the gods by the smell; as ointment for the body of the dead before the funeral. Also from the point of view of perfumes Early Archaic and Archaic Greece shows important differences from city to city, from socio-political groups to others. The long period, which is analysed in this paper, shows as well significant transformations in several aspects related to the world of perfumes
