Abstract:
Although there is a plenty of studies on Paul Celan and, in recent years, on Ghérasim Luca, the friendship between them has been little investigated. This article intends to fill this gap in the context of critical studies. Starting from the texts of the two authors and from the testimonies of those who knew both poets in Romania and France, this study wants to demonstrate that Paul Celan and Ghérasim Luca had a very close link between their artistic activities and their political orientations in Bucharest after the Second World War. These two poets participated at Romanian Surrealism and their texts, written mainly in Romanian, witness their great ethical and poetic passion after the discovery of the Nazi extermination camps. This article traces the most salient phases of their relationship and, above all, highlights the distance which characterized the two poets who followed Surrealism in the middle of the progressive and anti-fascist Left in Romania, by adopting a radically different style of writing
