Course Objectives

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course has three objectives:

1. To develop knowledge of the author and her works within their historical context, highlighting their formal characteristics

2. To cultivate the ability to read and interpret selected texts using discipline-specific tools, complemented by an initial comparison with key scholarly literature

3. To foster the capacity to approach and analyze works of Korean literature

 

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding

The teaching program aims to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary to understand Korean literary texts. The students must be able to interpret the acquired knowledge, demonstrating critical skills and formulating evaluations even when faced with other related subjects. Furthermore, they should be able to debate the pivotal moment of Korean Literature.

 

Additional Expected Learning Outcomes

Autonomy of Judgment

At the end of the course, the students should have acquired the competence and methodological skills necessary to manage their studies. During the course they can give opinions to encourage independent judgment and active participation to the lessons.

Communication skills

The students should be able to provide a general overview of Korean literature and be able to discuss clearly with appropriate words demonstrating to know the correct terminology and information related to works studied.

Learning skills

At the end of the course, the students should be able to study Korean literature from a systematic, historical, and critical perspective, utilizing the investigative methods specific to discipline. Furthermore, they are expected to develop an independent approach to their work and acquire the essential tools for interpreting texts effectively.



Course Prerequisites

It is necessary to have a good knowledge of Korean language, at least B1 level.


Teaching Methods

The Lectures involve the use of slides and digital materials. The course encourages discussions and critics about literary works with students. 


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test that evaluates the use of correct terminology, as well as analytical and synthetic skills regarding the literary texts covered.

The exam will be conducted in Italian, with the possibility to take it in English on request.

Contents

The course explores contemporary Korean literature and aims to understand 20th-century Korean society and its changes through the works of Park Kyong-ni, especially those from the 1960s. She is considered one of the first female Korean writers and is best known for her epic saga "The Land". Before writing this famous epic, she wrote other novels that show her deep and insightful view of the world and human nature.

Part of the course will involve reading and translating texts from the original Korean, while another part will encourage creative writing in Korean, inspired by Park Kyong-ni’s novels.
