Syllabus

Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Swahili Language I (Master’s level):

The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to consolidate their proficiency in Swahili, both written and spoken. It also seeks to broaden students' understanding of the language through the study of dialectal variants.

Swahili Language II (Master’s level):

The course is designed to help students achieve an advanced level of proficiency in Swahili, both oral and written, and to refine their theoretical and methodological approaches to translation to and from Swahili.

Swahili Literature I–II (Master’s level):

The course aims to provide students with an advanced understanding of the history and conceptual frameworks of translation within Swahili literature across the precolonial, colonial, and post-independence periods. The course includes critical debates and translation strategies applied to Swahili literary texts, through the analysis of selected case studies. Particular attention will be given to the intersections between translation practices and colonial memory in East Africa.


APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Swahili Language I (Master’s level):

The course is structured to progressively develop students' knowledge and skills in Swahili through the study of dialectal variants and the reading, analysis, and translation of advanced-level texts and articles in standard Swahili. Students will be prepared to engage with complex cultural and communicative contexts in both written and spoken forms. Written and oral production will be developed through text summaries and/or commentary in Swahili.

Swahili Language II (Master’s level):

The course aims to further strengthen students’ command of Swahili through the reading, analysis, and translation of selected texts and articles. Students will be trained to handle complex communicative and cultural contexts and to enhance their skills in literary translation to and from Swahili.

Swahili Literature I–II (Master’s level):

The course aims to develop students’ advanced understanding of the history and theoretical frameworks of translation in Swahili literature. Students will apply this knowledge in historical, critical, and textual analysis, through engagement in complex discussions on the course topics and the production of critical essays from both textual and translational perspectives.


ADDITIONAL LEARNING OUTCOMES

Independent Judgment: Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to manage acquired knowledge with critical thinking and independent judgment.

Communication Skills: Students should be able to clearly and effectively communicate their acquired knowledge, both orally and in writing.

Learning Skills: Students are expected to develop the necessary skills to independently identify and use study materials, and to navigate the field of Swahili language and literature studies with a high degree of autonomy.


Course Prerequisites

The language courses must be taken in progressive order.


Teaching Methods

The course includes year-long lectures, complemented by seminars and practical sessions with the language assistant aimed at developing communicative skills. Students will also engage in group work. In addition, self-assessment tests will be administered during the course.


Assessment Methods

Swahili Language I–II (Master’s level):

The final examination consists of a written and an oral component (passing the written exam is a prerequisite for admission to the oral exam). During the academic year, students will also take written self-assessment tests in preparation for the final exam.


  • The final written exam for Swahili Language I M consists of a quiz based on a Swahili text related to the course themes. The quiz includes reading comprehension questions as well as a short summary and commentary in Swahili.
  • The final written exam for Swahili Language II M consists of the translation of a short literary text from Swahili.
  • The oral exam for Swahili Language I M includes the reading, translation, and grammatical analysis of texts in Swahili dialectal varieties covered during the course, as well as a conversation in Swahili on topics discussed during language practice sessions.
  • The oral exam for Swahili Language II M involves a critical commentary on a selection of Swahili literary translations, based on the literary and theoretical-methodological texts covered in the syllabus, as well as a conversation in Swahili on topics discussed during language practice sessions.

Erasmus students may use English instead of Italian for translations and commentaries, if preferred.


Assessment criteria for written exams:

  • Relevance and completeness of responses;
  • Accuracy of morphological and syntactic structures, and lexical choice in Swahili written production;
  • Correctness and awareness in translation choices.


Assessment criteria for oral exams:

  • Accuracy in pronunciation and correctness in the translation and grammatical analysis of Swahili texts;
  • Completeness and correctness in translations and in the explanation of translation strategies;
  • Proper use of linguistic structures and terminology in spoken Swahili.


Swahili Literature I–II (Master’s level):

The final exam consists of an oral examination based on a previously submitted written paper related to the course topics. The oral exam is intended to assess the student’s acquired knowledge.

Language of examination: Italian. Erasmus students may use English instead of Italian, if preferred.

Assessment criteria for the written paper: Clarity and soundness of argumentation; Appropriate use of language; Proper use of sources.

Assessment criteria for the oral exam: Completeness and accuracy in presenting information and critical debates.
