Syllabus

Course Objectives

Expected Learning Outcomes

General Objective

The course aims to refine students’ skills in listening comprehension and written production. It focuses on the analysis and understanding of a wide variety of texts, including newspapers, literary magazines, literary works, and essays. Texts are partly selected based on students’ interests, with the goal of covering diverse fields (culture, social issues, history). The ability to produce well-structured texts is developed through regular writing assignments and translation exercises.

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding

The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary for reading, textual analysis, and the production of complex texts in Turkish, across different linguistic registers (literature, literary criticism, journalism).

Additional Learning Outcomes

Independent Judgment

By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate independent judgment in analyzing Turkish texts of varying complexity and typology.

Communication Skills

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to express themselves fluently in Turkish and effectively communicate information, ideas, and participate in complex discussions.

Learning Skills

By the end of the course, students should demonstrate strong learning abilities and a high degree of autonomy in addressing a variety of topics in Turkish and in translating complex texts.

Course Prerequisites

An intermediate level (B1–B2) of proficiency in Turkish is essential, particularly in reading comprehension and oral expression.

It is also helpful to have prior knowledge—at least basic notions—of Turkish literature and 20th-century Turkish history.

Students may compensate for any gaps in literature or history through specific readings recommended by the professor.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered through frontal lectures alternating with practical sessions focused on the analysis of literary texts and translation from Turkish into Italian, as well as seminars and other activities (such as individual presentations or research projects).

All components of the course aim to develop the full range of communicative skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In particular, listening comprehension and speaking skills are enhanced through sessions led by the native-speaking language assistant, supported by audiovisual materials.

Assessment Methods

Passing the language proficiency test is a prerequisite for admission to the subsequent oral production assessment and the final oral interview.

The examination consists of three components:

  1. A digital language proficiency test, assessing grammar and reading comprehension skills in Turkish, administered via the Moodle platform;
  2. An oral production assessment, conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams by the native-speaking language assistant (CEL);
  3. A final oral interview with the professor.

The digital test is graded on an A–D scale, where grades A, B, and C indicate a passing result, and D indicates failure.

Passing the language proficiency test is required in order to proceed to the oral production assessment and the final oral interview.

The oral production assessment, conducted via Microsoft Teams with the CEL, consists of a brief conversation on topics previously covered during classroom practice sessions.

The final oral exam includes a conversation in Turkish based on a complex topic discussed in class. It also involves reading a short text (such as a literary review, narrative excerpt, or book summary), which will be evaluated for grammatical analysis, general comprehension, and the ability to orally summarize its content.

The final grade is expressed on a 30-point scale.

The exam is conducted in Turkish and Italian.
