Syllabus

Course Objectives

In accordance with the topics detailed in the syllabus, at the end of the course students will be required to demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge and understanding of the events and developments that have affected the history of the Mediterranean in the long diachrony, in line with the syllabus lines of the course of study. This knowledge will enable them to elaborate and/or apply original ideas, not only within the class but also in broader (or interdisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.

The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary for the following activities: study and critical analysis of the texts included in the syllabus; study and critical analysis of the teaching material provided by the professor and aimed at deepening the topics covered in class; knowledge and ability to critically select the resources available on the web in relation to the topics covered; elements of Public History. Students will have to demonstrate that they know and can understand the issues relating to the major historical, political-institutional and social questions of the centuries of the formation of the modern Mediterranean (from the mid-15th century) up to the most recent era; that they can sustain arguments and develop complex discussions on the topics covered.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites required

Teaching Methods

The hours scheduled for teaching activities will be distributed among the following typologies: face-to-face lectures; viewing (and commentary/debate in the classroom) of audiovisual materials related to the teaching in question; participation in the lectures of historians/historians specialised in Euro-Mediterranean issues dealt with in the course; critical analysis of other teaching materials (iconographic, literary, etc.) presented and provided by the lecturer to further the issues dealt with in the course. Attendance and active participation in the course are strongly recommended. In addition to classroom lectures, the Microsoft Teams platform will be used to improve the quality of learning, facilitating access to resources and services. Students - both attending and non-attending - must register on the Teams platform in order to download all the lecture recordings and other teaching materials uploaded by the lecturer.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an oral test in Italian (or, if required, in English or French). No intercourse tests are scheduled. The test requires knowledge of the text of reference indicated, of the materials and contents presented by the professor in class, of one of the texts included as a special section. The appropriate use of terminology, the students' ability to orient themselves in the long diachrony of the history of the Mediterranean, to be able to adequately situate and comment on the materials presented in class will be assessed. Active participation in the course will be taken into account and highly valued. The assessment is expressed in 30ths.
