Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course aims to furnish students with an advanced, comprehensive understanding of Russian language and linguistics, encompassing both theoretical and applied aspects, and viewed from both a diachronic and synchronic perspective. Students are expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of complex issues in the phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, and stylistics of contemporary Russian. They will also delve into the main problems concerning the history of linguistic studies from the 18th century to the present, and the fundamental questions regarding the historical evolution of the language and the development of its literary norm. Upon completion of the course, students must be able to understand, analyse, and translate complex texts from literary, documentary, scientific, legal-administrative, journalistic, and religious fields. Students must also be able to hold conversations in Russian, demonstrating the ability to interact and express themselves at an upper-intermediate level (B2 proficiency as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR). This includes interacting with fluency and spontaneity with native speakers, understanding the main ideas of complex texts, and actively participating in discussions across all communicative, socio-cultural, and professional spheres.

Course Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree in Russian. Language skills and knowledge of Russian at the B1 CEFR level.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures, practical exercises, in class activities, independent study of teaching materials and completion of self-assessment exercises (multiple choice tests on the Moodle platform).

Assessment Methods

Preliminary online Moodle testing and a conversation in Russian via Microsoft Teams are required. Successful completion of this preliminary stage grants students access to the in-person oral examination, which comprises reading, translation, a presentation, and questions pertaining to the course content.
