Syllabus

Course Objectives

 

At the end of the training course, the students' competences and skills correspond approximately to: 1st year A1/A1+; 2nd year A2/A2+; 3rd year B1/B1+ (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Council of Europe). It is possible to carry out Erasmus study periods abroad, as well as it is possible to benefit from short scholarships: the stay in the countries of reference with attendance of language courses on site facilitates the consolidation of preparation and can enable the achieve high levels of competence.

 Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:

 At the end of the training course, the student will be able to communicate orally and in writing, understand oral and written communication and analyse and translate authentic texts, in accordance with the language level related to each year.

 

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgement:

The progressive mastery of the language and the study of its cultural-historical dimension allow the use of cultural heritage and direct access to literary, critical and publicistic sources.

The deepening in linguistic practice of the differences between the varieties

of the Serbian and Croatian language (BCMS) allows effective orientation

in the linguistic-cultural situation of the reference region.

Communication skills:

Comprehension, communication and analysis skills are developed according to the achieved language level.

Learning skills:

The solid acquisition of the linguistic basics allows the deepening of competences and skills with the degree of autonomy relative to the

linguistic level reached. Metalinguistic reflections on aspects of the linguistic-cultural history of the peoples of the region stimulates critical thinking and the ability to make judgements.


Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites: None for the first year; for the subsequent years: competences and skills acquired in the previous years.

PROPEDEUTICITY

The teaching of Serbian and Croatian Language I is propaedeutic to that of Serbian and Croatian Language II which, in turn, is propaedeutic to that of Serbian and Croatian Language III.


Teaching Methods

Lectures with in-depth seminars for the different years, when appropriate, in agreement with the students.

Practice in Language lab. 


Assessment Methods

 

METHODS FOR ASSESSING PROGRESS

 

 The examination consists of two parts, a written test preparatory to the oral test, and the final assessment is expressed in thirtieths.

 At the end of the first semester, an intercourse test may be held; during the lectures and exercises, in itinere tests are possible.

 

 Discussion of project paper: NO

 

 The written test may include: dictation, grammar exercises, translation from and into the foreign language, composition.

 The oral test may include: discussion of grammatical topics covered during the course, reading, analysis and translation of a text

 among those studied.

 

 Language of the exam: Italian, Serbian and Croatian.

 

 Evaluation criteria: The final evaluation is aimed at ascertaining the correct acquisition of the linguistic and metalinguistic competences and skills covered by the course. It will be assessed on the basis of the completeness of linguistic preparation, the ability to expand on topics covered during the course and the accuracy in the analysis of the forms and in the translation.

Contents

Course Title: Croatian and Serbian Language

First year: Introduction to the study of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin,

and Serbian linguistic area. Grammar bases, reading of short texts.

Overview of literary languages in BCMS (Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin

and Serbian) cultural systems until creation of modern national

language(s). Frame of historical and cultural processes determining the

formation of a common standard for Bosnians, Croats, Montenegrins, and

Serbs and then the standard multiplication in serbo-croatian linguistic

area.

Second and third years: translation and analysis of abridged, adapted or

original texts to improve linguistic knowledge and skills (morphology,

syntax, verbal aspect, verb semantic and verbal structure formation,

1. Phonetics, phonology; alphabets (Cyrillic and Latin). Morphology of nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, numbers. Introduction to sociolinguistics of the areas and differences of linguistic varieties. Reading and analysis of authentic texts adequate on students’ linguistic levels according to the year of study.

2. Cases syntax. Phrase syntax. Verbal aspect, semantics and verbal formation; word formation. Reading and analysis of authentic texts adequate on students’ linguistic levels according to the year of study.

Students not attending the lessons must agree their program with the professor.
