Syllabus

Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The laboratory aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, theoretical-scientific aspects, methodologies, and techniques specific to archaeological restoration, as well as the relevant technical terminology. This will equip them with both theoretical frameworks and practical knowledge for the study and interpretation of inorganic and organic archaeological materials.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The teaching programme intends to furnish students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary to define appropriate restoration methodologies for the conservation of archaeological materials, based on the identification of the main types of degradation affecting inorganic and organic archaeological artefacts.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of Judgement:

By the end of the laboratory, students should be able to identify the causes of various types of degradation and determine the most suitable restoration interventions.

Communication Skills:

Upon completion of the laboratory, students must demonstrate the ability to articulate, using appropriate technical language, the various methodologies employed in the context of restoration.

Learning Skills:

By the end of the teaching programme, students should have developed the critical skills necessary to locate and utilise supplementary materials relevant to the laboratory curriculum.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The laboratory will be structured as a series of lectures, including collective discussions on general topics related to archaeological restoration, alongside practical laboratory sessions focused on restoration activities involving archaeological artefacts originating from African, Asian, and Mediterranean contexts.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of learning will take place through an oral interview, aimed at verifying the achievement of the expected learning objectives and outcomes.

Language of the examination: Italian. Erasmus students who do not have full proficiency in Italian may take the exam in English.

Assessment criteria: Evaluation will be based on coherence, completeness of information, and correct use of terminology; on the ability to establish connections and relationships between different topics; and, similarly, on the capacity to approach a subject from multiple perspectives.
