Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES


By the end of the course, students will have acquired the ability to analyse audiovisual texts and identify their most complex elements from a translational perspective. In particular, they will be able to recognize and classify the multimodal, linguistic, and connotative features of the source text, with particular attention to the diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic variations of the Spanish language used in different communicative contexts.


This approach will enable them to critically reflect on the most effective translation strategies for rendering texts into Italian, taking into account the specific translation mode involved as well as current accessibility and social inclusion requirements in the distribution of multimedia content.


Practical activities aimed at producing translations from Spanish into Italian will allow students to consolidate their linguistic and translational competences while facilitating the assimilation of the theoretical notions addressed throughout the course.


Course Prerequisites

Proficiency in the four language skills of Spanish as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at level B2+, and in Italian at level C1.


Teaching Methods

The total number of course hours will be divided between theoretical/lecture-based sessions and practical/laboratory activities. In particular, students will be provided with the set of notions necessary to acquire the main features and specific characteristics of audiovisual translation, alternating theoretical instruction with activities designed to put these concepts into practice.


Practical exercises will make use of a variety of multimedia materials (short films, promotional videos and clips) distinguished by the diversity of registers and genres involved. Students will be guided in the use of audiovisual translation software, as well as in the development of translation projects that will be presented and discussed in class, with the aim of analysing and assessing the strengths and challenges of the translational process.


Assessment Methods

The examination will consist of an oral interview during which the students will be required to demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of the defining features of audiovisual translation, in its various purposes and forms. The exam will also assess the candidate's understanding of the characteristics of multimodal texts and the main challenges to be considered in the translation process.


Assessment will focus on the student's knowledge of the course content, coherence and clarity of expression, and ability to relate theoretical concepts to concrete examples.


During the examination, students will have the option to present a translation project based on a short text, explaining their translational choices as well as the strategies and techniques adopted in the process. This component is not mandatory; the procedures for completing it will be discussed in class.


The examination will be conducted in Spanish.
