The acquisition of appropriate conceptual background and corresponding expressive vocabulary. The ability to read contemporary reality in a diachronic and processual dimension.

THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The student/student must demonstrate the ability to recognize the complexity of phenomena and to connect the different planes-economic, political, social, cultural-that connote historical processuality; he/she must also demonstrate the ability to grasp the different scaling of the phenomena themselves (macro/micro).

ADDITIONAL EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgment:

The student is expected to develop the ability to reason about phenomena from circumstantial considerations, evaluating the sources of information, exercising a critical sense free from ideological or common sense simplifications.

Communication skills:

Be able to express oneself with appropriate terminology with respect to different historical phenomena.

Course Prerequisites

It is important to have a general knowledge of the main events and processes of contemporary history of the 19th-20th centuries, which should be acquired in the last year of high school. At the very least, knowing how to chronologically place phenomena such as the industrial revolution, political liberalism, imperialism, decolonization, globalization etc. is essential.

Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a “face-to-face” mode, making frequent use of historical sources and documents to be projected and analyzed in the classroom.

Assessment Methods

The exam is conducted orally in Italian, with exceptions to be agreed upon.

The teacher will assess both the body of knowledge acquired and the adequacy of the communicative register used, as well as the ability to connect the different planes-economic, political, social, cultural-that connote historical phenomena.
