Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the laboratory training activity, students will have to demonstrate that they possess and apply codic-paleographic knowledge, ability to transcribe Germanic texts from manuscripts, knowledge of the main stages of the editor's work in the returned textus and application and/or use of basic digital philology techniques.


The student will have to demonstrate that he or she is able to recognize the main stages of the editor's work and know and apply the basic knowledge relating to the reconstruction of texts, starting from the manuscript, use existing critical editions and digital material online, and have a fair amount of autonomy of initiative in evaluating editorial choices.



Course Prerequisites

This training activity is aimed at students who have already acquired knowledge of philology and linguistics, preferably in the Germanic area (therefore to II level students and at most to

highly motivated I level graduating students)



Teaching Methods

This training activity will take place in a seminar format, with some introductory frontal hours, exercises in the classroom and visits to the manuscript rooms of the libraries, in particular the National Library of Naples



Assessment Methods

via written report of the workshop participants



Texts

This activity is a practical laboratory that will refer to texts distributed by the teacher during the meetings and to the digitized manuscript material available online. More precise instructions will be given to the registered students after having certified their previous knowledge.

3. Philology and paleography: recognition of the main scripts

of Western Europe

4. The psychology of copying: typical errors in the transmission of texts

5. The development of a critical edition: reconstructing a text

6. Particularities of the Germanic documentary tradition

7. Exercises on manuscripts from the Germanic area

8. Practice of digital philology

9. Preparation of individual reports and their discussion in class

More information

It is emphasized that this activity is aimed at students who already have elements of philology and linguistics, especially and preferably of the Germanic area. Therefore, it is aimed at students of a master's degree course and GRADUATING students of the three-year degree course.
