Course Objectives
Expected learning outcomes:
- Second-year students should demonstrate a good command of the language (B1 level), in terms of both written and oral comprehension and production. They should also have a solid understanding of major translation theories and their applications, particularly in relation to the literary texts covered in class. They must be able to read and comprehend texts and translate them, identifying and analysing their narrative and formal strategies. They must also be able to analyse vocabulary informed by recent translation theories.
- Third-year students should demonstrate developed proficiency in all four Swedish language skills. This includes acquiring strong oral and written competence and mastering vocabulary, morphology, syntax and phonology in order to understand and produce fairly complex texts from various literary genres in both oral and written forms.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- The aim of this course is to equip students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary for the following activities: reading; textual analysis; and re-elaborating a general concept in a personalised way and applying it to a specific text or theme discussed in a work. Students must demonstrate their ability to understand and correctly communicate what they have learnt. They must also be able to re-elaborate the content they have learnt.

- Autonomy of Judgement
By the end of the course, students must demonstrate their ability to communicate information and form judgements on the topics covered, as well as their understanding of the translation challenges posed by a Swedish literary text.
- Communication skills:
Students must be able to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions effectively, demonstrating proficiency in Swedish at the required level. They must also be able to identify and re-elaborate information from complex Swedish texts and communicate it, expressing personal opinions on the themes discussed.
- Learning ability:
Students must understand the language structures that will enable them to continue their learning journey and demonstrate the ability to reflect independently on what they have learned. This will enable them to access more advanced levels subsequently.
Course Prerequisites
This course is designed for students who have already acquired the linguistic skills required to analyse syntactically complex Swedish texts and understand their structure. Attendance is recommended.
Prerequisites
As stated in the Study Manifesto, this course requires adherence to the following prerequisites: You can only take the exam if you have passed the Lianguage and Literature exams from the previous academic year.
Teaching Methods
The teaching activities will total 48 hours. Most of these will be frontal lessons (30 hours), in which students will gain knowledge of the history and theory of translation, as well as the lexical and formal analysis of Swedish literary texts.
The course also includes practical exercises aimed at developing the ability to apply acquired knowledge. These exercises will be carried out halfway through and at the end of the course. There will also be a translation workshop (six hours), seminars and other activities (eight hours) to reinforce learning at different levels. These lessons should be integrated with the annual Swedish language practice sessions, which form an integral part of the course.
A dedicated translation seminar on selected texts will be organised. Before proceeding with the translation of texts, a detailed analysis of the linguistic structures of the works will be conducted to highlight their peculiarities at both the lexical and morphosyntactic levels.
Assessment Methods
The exam includes a 50-minute written test and an oral exam. Students must first pass the written test to qualify for the oral exam.
The written test consists of a reading comprehension exercise, a written production exercise and a grammar test covering topics from the course.
The oral exam, which can only be taken after passing the written one, assesses your language skills and knowledge of the course material. Throughout the academic year, practical exercises with language assistants are scheduled as an integral part of the programme.
Evaluation criteria
The final grade, expressed out of thirty, confirms your acquisition of the necessary linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge and skills. The evaluation criteria for assessing your knowledge and abilities are: Completeness of information; coherence; correctness and fluency of language; accurate use of terminology; and the ability to apply acquired knowledge.
