Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students will have an overview of different periods in the history of the literatures of the Serbian and Croatian (and Bosnian and Montenegrin) peoples, depending on the number of years of literature that will follow, and an in-depth knowledge of exemplary authors and works of the literatures of the peoples of the region.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:

At the end of the learning pathway, the student will be able to place in the current cultural and historical-literary context, authors and works treated; analyse literary and critical texts in an integrated manner in their historical, cultural, linguistic contexts.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgement:

The study and in-depth study of phases, themes, authors and works of the literatures of Serbs and Croats will enable the student to acquire skills, methodological and critical tools of wide application

in the humanities.


Course Prerequisites

None for the first year; for subsequent years: competences

acquired in previous years.

PROPEDEUTICITY

None.


Teaching Methods

Lectures, including the reading and analysis of original texts. In addition to the readings on themes and authors relating to the course (material provided during the lectures), the student will autonomously read: 1) at least four literary works from the period corresponding to his or her year in the discipline; 2) the corresponding part of the literary history textbook (from the origins to the 18th century; the 19th century; the 20th century). Students who only take one or two Literature exams must agree on this part of the programme even if attending. Not attending students must agree the whole programme.


Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an oral test and the assessment is expressed in thirtieths.

Discussion of project paper: NO

Language of the exam: Italian, Serbian and Croatian.

Assessment criteria: The final assessment will ascertain the historical-literary and critical-analytical knowledge acquired during the course and with the individual study, through the discussion and analysis of the topics dealt with and of the works read. It will be assessed on the basis of the ability to frame authors, works and themes studied in cultural and literary history, to analyse the texts read, and to critically expound the contents learnt.

Contents

History of Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin and Serbian literatures from

the Origins to the Twentieth century through the most relevant authors

and works.

Students not attending the lessons must agree their program with the

professor.

1. Historical and cultural contest, particular interpretative questions in

national historiographies;

2. Themes and protagonists of the areas’ literatures;

3. Readings and analyses of literary works and critical essays.

More specific bibliographical indications and materials will be provided

during the lectures.
