Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS: At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate a good knowledge of Spanish literary contexts of the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as the authors and works included in the examination programme; they must be able to read in the original language and understand the various texts under study, comment on them highlighting their formal characteristics, thematic content and relationships with the historical, cultural and aesthetic context, also from a comparative and cross-cultural perspective.

CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The course of study aims to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary to achieve a critical approach to the texts included in the syllabus. In the assessment, the student must demonstrate that he/she knows and understands the formal and thematic characteristics and the historical and cultural issues relating to the texts and themes addressed; although the examination is held in Italian, the student must be able to read the texts in the original language, understand them (it is therefore strongly recommended to undertake the study of the examination programme when an intermediate level of linguistic competence has been reached) and, if necessary, translate them into Italian, as well as being able to comment on them critically, framing and contextualising them in the culture to which they belong.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS: 1) Autonomy of judgement: The student must demonstrate that she/he has not only developed a good ability to read, translate and comment on the texts included in the examination programme, but also to possess an autonomy of judgement that enables her/him to analyse these texts through the identification of socio-historical and cultural characteristics, to reflect on the ethical aspects connected with them, and to critically evaluate issues connected with cultural interaction. 2) Communication skills: The student is expected to demonstrate the ability to effectively contextualise phenomena, authors and works, as well as to be able to clearly communicate such knowledge and ideas to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors, therefore in both scientific and didactic-dissemination contexts, also in a broader cultural and intercultural context. 3) Learning ability: The student must demonstrate that he/she has critically assimilated the historical, cultural and literary dynamics of the period under study and that he/she is able to independently undertake new courses of study at a higher level in the same discipline; he/she must also be able to find and use critical bibliography, information on the web and databases useful for autonomous research.

Course Prerequisites

Students must have a good knowledge of the history and literature of Spain, from its origins to the 15th century. It is also important to have the linguistic skills to enable a critical approach to literary texts in Spanish. Non-attending students, in addition to the knowledge and skills already mentioned, must be able to read, translate and critically interpret the texts and examination topics independently. In order to sit the Spanish Literature II examination, students must have passed the Spanish Literature I examination.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 48 hours of frontal lessons, in Italian, conducted with the aid of slides and iconographic and audiovisual material. The lessons may also have a seminar character in the phase of reading and interpretation of the texts foreseen in the programme, as well as in the involvement of the students in activities such as dramatised readings, individual or group work/research, etc..

Assessment Methods

The final exam will consist of an interview in Italian in which the knowledge acquired will be tested, in particular the ability to contextualise the works analysed in Spanish and European culture and literature, as well as the ability to read, translate and comment on the texts in the syllabus. Intercourse tests are not foreseen. The in-depth knowledge of the topics studied, the ability to read, translate and comment on the texts, the completeness of the information and the correct use of the specific terminology and methodologies of the discipline will be positively assessed.
