Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the three-year course, the student will acquire fundamental knowledge and notions for the historical-critical analysis of Polish literature from its origins to the present.


Course Prerequisites

It is desirable, although not mandatory, to have some historical knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe.


Teaching Methods

The course, which includes two parts, an institutional one and a monographic one, will be held in a conventional manner, characterized by lectures in Italian, reading and analysis of literary and critical passages in Polish, group discussion. The student will independently read three literary works of the period corresponding to his/her year of the discipline (I year: from the origins to Young Poland; II year: from literature between the two wars to contemporaneity) and the relative part of the textbook. A list of recommended readings will be provided during the lessons.


Assessment Methods

The exam is a discussion on the topics of the course. The language of the exam is Italian and/or Polish.

- Storia della letteratura polacca, a cura di L. Marinelli, Einaudi, Torino 2004 (o in traduzione polacca: Historia literatury polskiej, Ossolineum, Wrocław 2009).

- Czesław Miłosz, Storia della letteratura polacca, CSEO, Bologna 1983.


For the general part, a basic knowledge of Polish history is required, so it is recommend reading the following reference texts for the literary period covered:


- encyclopedic entry "Polonia" in the Encyclopedia Treccani.

- Jerzy Łukowski, Hubert Zawadzki, Polonia. Il paese che rinasce, Beit, Trieste 2008.

- Aleksander Gieysztor, Storia della Polonia, Bompiani, Milano 1983.

- Madonia C. 2013, Fra l'orso russo e l'aquila prussiana. La Polonia dalla Repubblica nobiliare alla IV Repubblica (1506-2006), Bologna: Clueb.

- Alessandro Ajres, Storia della Polonia. Dal 1918 a oggi, Editrice Morcelliana, Brescia 2023.


Further information, handouts and bibliographical materials will be provided during the course.


Contents

General part is divided as follows:

First year: from origins to the Young Poland movement.

Second year: from literature between the two World Wars to recent

literature.


Special part will be focus on fairy tale literature in Poland.

Starting from the 2025/26 academic year, you can be obtained 9 ECTS for the first year course (new regulation - 12/9/6) and 8 ECTS for the second year.
