Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students will develop greater mastery of the basics of geographic and cartographic elements;

Observing and describing the relationships between society and territory at different scales for a better understanding of contemporary reality.

Analyze and describe the forms of territorial organization that are strongly connected with economic, social and cultural structures, using the experimental tools of visual geography: working with the media and working on the media.

Improve the understanding of the role of human societies in the organization of the environment and that of the meaning of the natural environment and the action of human beings on it, with particular attention to the social dimension. Develop awareness of the lived territory and of the role of space in one's existence.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The student will have to demonstrate that he has understood and is able to critically rework the main elements of contemporaneity in its spatial declination. In particular, the student must master the elements of reading maps and the geographical landscape; the processes of interaction between human beings and the environment (from settlements to production and interaction processes); the effects of space/time compression dictated by globalization; the evolution of the urbanization process; the description of the daily territory through the tools of cultural geography; mastery of the evolution of geographical thought. Use of visual geography approaches.

Ability to critically use the knowledge of human geography at different scales and its fundamental methods of analysis and representation.

LEARNING ABILITY:

The study method aims to develop the learning skills and the use of geographical and cartographic language that will allow to deal with more analytical topics of the same knowledge in the future and, at the same time, to be able to observe in a spatial and territorial perspective what is foreseen by other exams.

The recommended texts are available at the library of the Department of Human and Social Sciences (Palazzo Giusso, 1st floor).

Interested students are eligible for loans in accordance with current regulations


Course Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of the geographical and cartographic elements that allow the observation and description of the main morphological, climatic and landscape elements of human settlements is essential; the location and the main elements of the territorial organization in the different continents.


Teaching Methods

The course will take place through lectures with the aid of presentation tools.

At least 6 hours, of the 48 hours foreseen, will be devoted to exercises aimed at verifying learning through practical applications. Students will be invited to prepare multimedia presentations for which the last 4/6 hours are destined, according to the number of candidates available for this final exercise


Assessment Methods

The exam is oral only

Discussion of project paper: yes, for attending students

Language in which the exam takes place: Italian.

Evaluation criteria: The evaluation will be based on ascertaining the achievement of the training objectives set by the course. The mastery of the geographical vocabulary; the demonstration of knowledge of the theoretical and applicative foundations relating to basic geographical themes; clarity, logic, completeness, conciseness, methodological rigor of the expositions and arguments. Argumentative ability in relation to the evolution of cultural geography with particular reference to the approaches and theories of post-structuralism. It will also be appreciated, as an added value for evaluation purposes, the demonstration of concrete reflection and argumentation skills on contemporary events with reference to the geographical context in which the student lives.
