Obiettivi Formativi

Knowledge and Understanding

Students will acquire an advanced understanding of the modern history of the Middle East, from the late Ottoman era to the present, including key political, social, and cultural transformations. They will also engage with major historiographical debates—such as Orientalism, post-colonial critique, revisionist approaches, and the longue durée tradition—gaining awareness of how historians have shaped and reshaped narratives of the region .

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

Students will be able to critically apply historiographical frameworks to interpret primary and secondary sources, comparing competing narratives—e.g., imperial versus indigenous accounts—and evaluating how different methodologies (microhistory, intellectual history, gender history) influence our understanding of Middle Eastern transformations .

Making Judgements

By the end of the course, students will develop independent analytical skills to assess the strengths and limitations of historiographical approaches—such as the post‑colonial critique, and revisionist Islamic studies—constructing well‑argued positions on the evolution of historical interpretations.

Communication Skills

Students will learn to synthesize complex historiographical debates and clearly articulate them in both oral presentations and written assignments, demonstrating precise use of historical terminology and argumentation.

Learning Skills

The course will equip students with the methodological tools to continue researching Middle Eastern history autonomously, engaging with evolving historiographical trends and sources, and contributing to ongoing scholarly debates.

Prerequisiti

It is important to have a basic knowledge of the history of the Middle East and North Africa.

Metodi didattici

The course is organized as a monographic module, focusing on a specific theme or issue in the contemporary history of the Middle East, explored in depth. It adopts a mixed teaching approach that combines traditional lectures with seminar sessions. The latter are based on the active participation of students.

Each seminar session will begin with an oral presentation by a student or a group of students, based on documents or texts provided by the instructor, and will be followed by the submission of an individual written paper.

The course makes use of the Moodle e-learning platform for the distribution of handouts and other materials.

Verifica Apprendimento

The final exam is oral. The grade is expressed on a 30-point scale.

The exam will be conducted in English

Attending students

The final grade will be based on the following:

  • 40% active participation in the seminar
  • 40% individual research paper
  • 20% oral exam

Non-attending students

The oral exam will assess students’ knowledge of the main historical phases of the Palestinian question, from the late Ottoman period to the post-Oslo era, as well as their ability to critically frame the main related historiographical issues. Particular emphasis will be placed on analytical skills, completeness of information, and the correct use of terminology.
