Il riposo dei guerrieri. Una ‘nuova' iscrizione da un ‘vecchio' elmo della necropoli dell'Osteria di Vulci, scavi Ferraguti-Mengarelli 1929-31

Abstract:
The warriors’ rest. A ‘new’ inscription from an ‘old’ helmet of Vulci’s Osteria necropolis, Ferraguti-Mengarelli excavations 1929-1931 · The article presents
an unpublished etruscan inscription recently identified on the inner side
of a helmet of the type “mit stirnkehle, mit Ohrausschnitten” of the classification of Hermann Pflug, coming from tomb 55 of the “Osteria” necropolis in Vulci, preserved at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia and found in the Mengarelli-Ferraguti excavations of 1930. The analysis and interpretation of the inscription – harn ste – offer the starting point for a reconsideration of the chronology of the entire funerary equipment and for a quick summary on the ‘craft of arms’ in central Tyrrhenian Italy during the 4th century BC. The distribution of similar helmets, particularly concentrated in the necropolis of Perugia, and the examination of the inscription lead to believe that will be possible a connection with the Etruscan family names havrna(s)/*harna(s) and havrenies/harenies and to formulate some hypotheses on the origin of the nomen.
