From the Crypts to Funeral Gardens: The Transformation of Jewish Burial Spaces in the Early Middle Ages

This contribution describes the transition, accompanied by a normative change in Judaism, from burial in underground environments to that in subdial cemeteries marked by steles. Particularly the evidence of the late antique and early medieval period in Italy is examined, with particular regard to Venosa and the Salento.
