Recent working and living conditions of workers in the garment and electronics sector in industrial parks in Vietnam

This study examines the working and living conditions of laborers employed in the garment and electronics sectors within Vietnam's key economic regions. Conducted under the EU-funded project ECOW—Empowering Civil Society and Workers in Vietnam—the research was coordinated by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences in collaboration with the University of Naples L'Orientale and two Vietnamese NGOs. Reflecting its interdisciplinary nature, the research integrates approaches from economic sociology, political science, and social history.

Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, including extensive field surveys across industrial zones in the North, Central, and South of Vietnam, the study involved over 3,000 interviews with workers. It delves into their socio-economic conditions, labor contracts, occupational health, union participation, and future aspirations, while also assessing the involvement of social organizations in supporting workers. The findings highlight sectoral and regional disparities, the challenges of implementing international labor standards, and the pressing need for improved living and working conditions. This research provides evidence-based recommendations to inform industrial policy and enhance workers' welfare through policy dialogues at local and national levels.
