Trump, Sexism and Twitter: An Update

Capitolo di libro
Data di Pubblicazione:
2021
Abstract:
This study provides an update and extension of one of the author’s previous works on U.S. President Trump’s sexist remarks expressed via Twitter, one of his favourite means of communication (Scotto di Carlo 2020). Specifically, this work compares the findings obtained from a previous analysis of the Tweets published during Trump's first presidential terms with those posted during the 2020 campaign. To further verify the updated results, the study has also included a comparison with a corpus of Tweets addressing or referring to men, issued during the same time-span, namely from the beginning of the second presidential campaign (June 18, 2019) to the current date (March 1, 2020). An overall comparison with the first study probably suggests the usage of a less harsh language against women, even if it is not possible to know whether this difference is part of a deliberate choice or not. However, not much has changed in the underlying ideas that are conveyed through Trump’s Tweets addressing women.
