Abstract:
As a land with a vast array of linguistic phenomena and over 600 languages, Indonesia offers researchers a broad range of data resources, ranging from the island of Sumatra to the most eastern end of the Papua Island. This study represents an interesting contribution and reflection on the problem of multilingualism that shapes the linguistic landscape of Indonesia. Owing to its highly multicultural and multilingual nature, Indonesia is a fascinating and valuable laboratory for research on dialectology and sociolinguistics. The book will fill a gap in the literature on the dialectology of Indonesia providing contributions on new unpublished data in this expanding field and offering novel insights into the complex sociolinguistic environment in Indonesia. The paper presents an overview of the most recent contributions in the field of Dialectology and sociolinguistics in Indonesia and reflects on the role of dialectology and sociolinguistics in addressing language issues at a methodological and regional level.
