Sociolinguistics and Dialectological Studies in Indonesia

Edited Book
Publication Date:
2021
abstract:
Sociolinguistics and Dialectological Studies in Indonesia is a collection of studies on dialectology and sociolinguistics conducted in Indonesia and includes selected papers presented at two Conferences held at Universitas Indonesia in 2017. As a land with a vast array of linguistic phenomena and over 600 languages, Indonesia offers researchers a broad range of data resources, ranging from the island of Sumatra to the most eastern end of the Papua Island. Although this book focuses primarily on the western part of Sumatra and Java it represents an interesting contribution and reflection on the problem of multilingualism that shapes the linguistic landscape of Indonesia. Owing to its highly multicultural and multilingual nature, Indonesia is a fascinating and valuable laboratory for research on dialectology and sociolinguistics. This book will fill a gap in the literature on the dialectology of Indonesia providing contributions on new unpublished data in this expanding field and offering novel insights into the complex sociolinguistic environment in Indonesia.
