The article deals with the French diplomatic intervention to establish a
constitutional monarchy in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, the first
Spanish colony in Latin America to declare its independence from Spain.
First, the analysis will be focused on the close connection between the French
foreign policy on this topic and the coeval domestic politics aiming at consolidating
the constitutional monarchy of Louis XVIII. Second, the French intervention
will be analyzed in the light of the more general relationship between
France and Spain during the Restauration.
