★ This essay presents the literary motif of “scorned modesty”, whose development extends from the pages of Pseudo-Hegesippus to Boccaccio, Masuccio and Bandello and from these to the libertine fiction of Ferrante Pallavicino. In Spain the seducer plays the leading role in Tirso’s Burlador de Sevilla, whilst in France he inspires the greatest playwright, Molière. Yet the history of the productivity, rewriting and variations on the theme is far wider.
