abstract:
"Nigromantia secundum physicam, nigromantia imaginum:
Art and Science in William of Auvergne"
The paper provides a survey on the debate on the Magic, between
the close of 19th and early 20th centuries up to the recent decades.
Moving beyond simplistic notions of witchcraft and supernatural folklore,
this article provides an up-to-date assessment and overview of the
latest academic research. After a general introduction on «Magic», the
paper accounts the richness and the complexity of such debate in the
discussions held at Paris by William of Auvergne in the early 13th century.
Current historiography just like William of Auvergne treat «Magic»
in two speculative ways: as Science and as Art.
This paper displays specifically the presence and the meaning of natural
magic and nigromantia imaginum in William of Auvergne throughout
an up-to-date examination of some issues present in his major works.
