Abstract:
The research concerns the Chinese settlement of Nagasaki, from the end of 16th Century to the beginning of 18th Century. It analyses the intermediary role attended by the Chinese in Nagasaki between China and Japan, in the light of the historical and political context of both China -the Ming Qing transition- and Japan -the reunification of the Country and the first century of the Tokugawa bakufu-. In particular, the research takes into exam the Chinese activities in Nagasaki, economic, political, intellectual, as well as their social structure and organization. Moreover the essay deals with impact of the Chinese activities on the Japanese society, also because of the significant number of political refugees, Ming loyalist, escaping from the Manchu and settling in Nagasaki. This flux of Chinese migration alarmed the Tokugawa authorities and led to the founding of the Tojin Yashiki (the 'Chinese Quarter') in 1689. The essay deal in fact in the last part with the study of the Chinese Compound, its structure, organization and functions.
