Abstract:
The present author's section of this paper illustrates the implications for Semitic linguistics of Pietro della Valle's travels in the Orient: his discovey in Damascus, and concern for the publication in Europe, of a manuscript of the Samaritan Targum to the Pentateuch; his participation as an Orientalist to the Renaissance interconfessional and transnational network known as the Republique des Lettres; his correspondence on Semitic philological topics with Jean Morin; his recording a Greek-Palmyrene bilingual in Northern Syria and its contribution to the decipherment of Palmyrene; his lexical data on Neo-Mandaic spoken in southern Mesopotamia and south-western Iran; his information on different Neo-Arabic and Neo-Aramaic varieties he encountered during his travels; and much more.
