abstract:
In the exemplary tales of the first part of Conde Lucanor, Juan Manuel skilfully exploits the possibilities of the temporal and spatial dimensions of narrative. By way of example, the study analyses the L tale, with its deliberate alternation of the acceleration and deceleration of actions which progress according to the double direction of the protagonist’s journey, the XLV tale, where the diachronic dilatation of the devil’s actions leads to a predictable epilogue for his protégé, and the XI tale, in which the temporal and spatial magic trick employed by don Yllán to trick the disciple is coupled by Don Juan’s narrative sleight of hand addressed to the reader.
