Interrelations and boundaries between Tafsīr and Ḥadīth literature: the exegesis of Malik b. Anas’s Muwatta’ and classical Quranic commentaries

Chapter
Publication Date:
2014
abstract:
The article discusses the use of the exegetical tradition attested in the Muwatta' by Malik ibn Anas (d. 795) which are quoted in later tasfirs. In the first part the textual variants attested in the many recensions of the Muwatta' are discussed. In the second part the quotations of the exegetical reports - around 30 - are traced in later exegetical literature. The analysis evidences how the exegesis from the Muwatta' was rarely quoted and mainly by Maliki authors, attesting how tafsor and hadith genres were connected but deaing with differing concerns and not always using the same materials.
