abstract:
This chapter draws on research conducted as part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie project devoted to the Abbey of Saint-Médard de Soissons. Adopting a comparative perspective and setting the case study against evidence from other European sites, it investigates how devotional spaces were structured within early medieval monastic complexes. Particular attention is paid to the differentiation between spaces accessible to pilgrims and those associated with aristocratic groups and the royal court, especially in the Carolingian period.
