From Luxeuil to Corbie and beyond the boundaries. Merovingian book culture influences in carved inscriptions from some 8th century italian monasteries

some eight-ninth century epigraphic practices, which made their appearance in the Italian monastic context. The chief focus of this study is the phenomenon of the circulation of manuscripts and scripts in the Merovingian and Carolingian sphere, giving attention to the role played, in this sense, by some important figures belonging to the monastic hierarchy. From the scriptoria of Luxeuil and Corbie, new ideas came to Italy through different “channels”: the abbey of San Colombano at Bobbio in Italy, bound by a vital link to both the insular and the Luxovian spheres, provides one obvious example. The second case examined is that of the monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno, in southern Italy, for which analogies have been identified between ninth-century inscriptions and the manuscripts produced at Corbie under abbot Adalhard (781-826).
