In Comisso’s life, the participation in the Fiume expedition repre-sents a turning point, during which the author grapples with D’Annunzio’s style to define his artistic and literary identity. This essay sheds light on the underlying reasons for this shift and the gradual abandonment of lyrical-vitalistic forms, giving way to a pared-down style of writing, anchored in the everyday and sensitive dimension of life at sea. This new style was born during the writer’s voyage aboard the ship IlGioiello along the Adriatic coast; an itiner-ary documented in an unpublished notebook from 1922.
