IMedea by Sulayman Al Bassam: From Ancient Myth to Modern Migration

Chapter
Publication Date:
2026
abstract:
Medea is one of the best-known mythical #gures, and Euripides’ Medea (431
BCE) stands as an enduring classic of Greek tragedy in contemporary theatre.
Throughout the history of world theatre, her myth has been skilfully reworked
to harness its powerful resonance in addressing pressing contemporary issues. Kuwaiti playwright, director, actor and producer Sulayman al-Bassam
(b. 1972) transforms Medea into an Arab refugee in Europe, thus constructing a critique that is both endogenous and exogenous.
