ABSTRACT
The abundant use of lexical interference in the language of Shmelev’s long novel The Stranger has
double function: to reproduce the speech of native French speakers and reflect the specificity of Russian émigrés’ verbal behavior in France, that is the degree of Russian language correctness – incorrectness of the protagonists. Russian and French languages in contact and in contrast complete, from a linguistic point of view, a picture of Russian émigrés’ life in France.
